BIOPHILIC NARRATIVES

We recognise the role of formal, non-formal, and informal learning in raising awareness on climate change and conservation and building cooperation across local, national, and international levels.


Our work includes researching gaps in skills and awareness, facilitating workshops and forums, developing resource materials and creative outputs such as films and art, and running impact campaigns to inspire action. 

2025 WORKSHOPS AND FORUMS

CONSERVATION PHOTOGRAPHERS EXPOSURE PROGRAM: COHORT 1

In 2025, in partnership with the TonyWild Foundation, we launched the inaugural Conservation Photography Exposure Program, a 6-month mentorship initiative supporting emerging photographers passionate about nature and storytelling.

STORYTELLING FOR LANDSCAPE STEWARDS

On 20th June, 2025, we led a storytelling session for the Landscape Stewards at the Global Landscapes Forum (GLF) Community & Action Assembly 2025.

CAMPUS BIOBLITZ AT WCK CENTRE FOR TOURISM, TRAINING AND RESEARCH

On 13th June 2025, we hosted our second Campus BioBlitz at the WCK Centre for Tourism Training and Research. 

CAMPUS BIOBLITZ AT UNIVERSITY OF NAIROBI

On 24th May 2025, we held our first-ever Campus BioBlitz at the University of Nairobi, Upper Kabete Campus.

Conservation Optimism Webinar Collaboration

On May 27th, 2025, Biophilic Conversations hosted a powerful and insightful webinar titled “From Stories to Systems: How Storytelling Can Influence Policy.” This was in collaboration with a UK-based organisation, Conservation Optimism. The session explored how storytelling, through blogs, films, and photo essays, can drive systemic change in conservation and climate action, particularly when led by African youth.

Youth Dialogue on Community Advocacy at african nazarene university

On 17th March 2025, Biophilic Conversations was represented by Francisca Kasuku at a youth dialogue hosted by the WECANU Club at Africa Nazarene University. The session focused on community outreach and environmental governance, sparking vibrant discussions among students and young advocates.

World Wildlife Day Youth Mentorship

On 8th March 2025, just days after World Wildlife Day, we collaborated with the TonyWild Foundation to host 45 students from five universities for a field experience at Nairobi National Park and the Giraffe Centre. Under the theme “Wildlife Conservation and Finance: Investing in People and Planet.” Students and partners explored conservation through storytelling, photography, and place-based learning alongside top observers from the Great Southern Bioblitz and conservation storytellers.

2024 WORKSHOPS AND FORUMS

NDC 3.0 Regional Forum - UN Rwanda

on 7th to 9th October, Mary Morrison delivered an impactful opening intervention at the NDC 3.0 Forum for Africa, emphasising the urgent need for ambitious climate pledges and putting a “human face” to climate change by spotlighting vulnerable communities in Kenya and across Africa. Her remarks reinforced Biophilic Conversations’ mission of ensuring inclusivity in climate and environmental action.

Strengthening Youth Voices in Conservation Policy

On 20th to 21st August 2024, at the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) offices in Nairobi, Kenya, Biophilic Conversations was proudly represented by Mary Morrison. The workshop, organised in partnership with WWF Kenya and the Conservation Alliance Kenya (CAK), brought together youth, conservation partners, and policymakers to engage with the processes of the UNFCCC, CBD, and CITES conventions.

IUCN Africa Conservation Forum

On 24th June 2024, we had the opportunity to participate in the IUCN Africa Conservation Forum, where we facilitated a workshop during the Youth Forum, in collaboration with MAZINGIRA YETU MAGAZINE. Our session, titled “Effective Communication for Nature Conservation: Bridging Science and Society,” focused on equipping young conservationists with practical skills for effective science communication.

Climate Fresk Kenya and 3es Experience

On 3rd May 2024, we had an amazing climate event at Le’Mac Building with 3es Experience and Climate Fresk Kenya on climate change. The event involved understanding climate change through a game developed by Climate Fresk and involved individuals making pledges on climate information widely and taking concrete actions to mitigate their carbon footprint. 

Climate and Clean Air Conference

On 23rd February 2024, Mary Morrison gave the opening remarks at the closing plenary of the Climate and Clean Air Conference 2024. This conference brought together the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC)’s 86 state and 88 non–state Partners to discuss science and policy, share best practices, and develop a shared agenda in key emitting sectors such as agriculture, waste, fossil fuel, household energy, heavy-duty vehicles and cooling.

2023 WORKSHOPS AND FORUMS

UNFCCC cOP 28

From 26th November to 12th December 2023, Mary Morrison represented us at the 18th Conference of Youth (COY18) and the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai. At her first COP, she participated in high-level engagements, including a meeting with Belgium’s Prime Minister, Alexander De Croo, and a UNICEF-led panel on youth as partners in climate action. Mary highlighted the intersections between climate change, social inequities, and biodiversity conservation, reinforcing Biophilic Conversations’ mission to champion youth-led and inclusive climate solutions.

GREEN CAREERS SUMMIT - Biodiversity at COP 28 and the UNFCCC process

On 17th November 2023, we hosted the second Green Careers Summit at IFAW Kenya offices, with a special focus on the UNFCCC process.  The summit highlighted the critical role of nature in combating and mitigating climate change, featuring engaging discussions that emphasised the importance of green jobs and the need for inclusive participation across diverse professions. The speakers included Paul Kaluki, George Okwaro, Kelvin Muli, Steve Itela and supported by the Conservation Alliance of Kenya.

ALUMNI CONNECTION AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NAIROBI

On 15th November 2023, Biophilic Conversations, together with M Young Environmental Initiative, Wildlife Students Association, Kenya Environmental Action Network, Chiromo Environmental Awareness Club, and the University of Nairobi, hosted a Career Talk and Workshop. The event brought together students from Wildlife Management and Conservation, Environmental Conservation, Natural Resource Management, and Veterinary Medicine to explore the diverse career paths within these fields. Our esteemed speakers, Paul Kaluki, Francisca Kasuku, Dr. Edel Odhiambo, Kiptoo Chemoiwo, Dr. Juliet Waiyaki, and Dr. Mukami Ruoro, shared their journeys, challenges, and insights, sparking inspiring discussions on conservation futures.

GLOBAL LANDSCAPES FORUM 2023

On 11th and 12th October, we were media partners at the GLF Nairobi 2023 Hybrid Conference, joining the Global Landscapes Forum in shaping “A New Vision for Earth.” From inspiring conversations to moments of laughter, dance, and genuine connection, the experience embodied the spirit of Biophilic Conversations, an open platform for candid dialogue. 

GREEN CAREERS SUMMIT - ADMI

On 27th October 2023, Biophilic Conversations, in partnership with the Conservation Alliance of Kenya, hosted the “Elevating Green Careers Through Digital Media” Summit at ADMI. The event brought together young conservationists eager to shape impactful careers in the environmental field. Two dynamic panels of speakers,  Abigael Kima, Tanya Onserio, Steve Itela, Mary Morrison, Harriet Owala, Alvin Kaunda, Sam Thuku, Fiona Tande, Sandra Ruongo, and Dylan Habil, shared their wisdom on building careers in conservation through digital storytelling and media. We also hosted two masterclasses with Collins Busuru and Stephen Nderitu. The summit created a platform to bridge the gap between students and conservation organisations, inspiring the next generation of green leaders to pursue opportunities and thrive in conservation careers.

Local Conference of Youth – Kenya

From 3rd to 5th October, Mary Morrison, Director and Operations at Biophilic Conversations, participated in the Local Conference of Youth – Kenya (LCOY Kenya) hosted by the Kenya Climate Change Working Group (KCCWG) and the African Youth Initiative on Climate Change (AYICC) at Africa Nazarene University. Themed “Youth-led Climate Action: Bridging the Gap Between Policy and Practice”, the event created space for young voices to shape Kenya’s climate agenda. Mary joined the High-Level Intergenerational Baraza as a panelist, where she underscored the importance of inclusive dialogue between generations. Drawing on her seven years as an environmental attorney, she highlighted the urgent need to advance intergenerational equity in climate action.

AFRICA CLIMATE SUMMIT 2023

From 4th-6th September 2023, as part of the COP28 International Youth Climate Delegate Program, we took part in the Africa Youth Climate Assembly (AYCA), Africa Climate Summit (ACS), and Africa Climate Week (ACW), a week marked by intense sessions, networking, and self-discovery. Our Director and Operations, Mary Morrison, reflected on the profound impacts of climate change, from floods and landslides to rising temperatures and seas, deeply rooted in her connection to Kenya’s coastal communities. The AYCA convened youth across the continent to deliver a powerful declaration emphasising Africa’s demographic dividend, justice, and youth inclusion.

X SPACE: What Will It Take to Restore the Nairobi River?

On 12th December 2022, in partnership with Mazingira Yetu we hosted our first - ever X (formerly Twitter) Space to spotlight the rehabilitation and restoration of the Nairobi River. The discussion, led by Victoria Wanjohi (Biophilic Conversations Founder and Executive Director) and guest Sam Dindi (Director of Planning and Community Mobilisation, Mazingira Yetu), explored the challenges and opportunities for reviving this vital ecosystem.

LAUNCH OF BIOPHILIC CAREERS board

On 9th May 2022, we launched the  Biophilic Careers Board, an exciting platform dedicated to sharing opportunities in environmental and wildlife conservation across Africa. From photography competitions and fellowships to scholarships, workshops, and career openings, the Careers Board serves as a one-stop hub for Africans working for nature or showcasing Africa’s wildlife and wild spaces on the global stage.

DARAJA ACADEMY Mentorship program

In February 2022, Biophilic Conversations Fellow Camilla Odhiambo, supported by Conservation Careers, visited Daraja Academy in Nanyuki to inspire students on how they can channel their careers toward conservation.

Conservation Careers Fellows

In 2021, Biophilic Conversations partnered with Conservation Careers UK to lead the Conservation Careers Program, an initiative designed to guide and inspire young people exploring green career paths. The program provided practical tools, mentorship, and insights into the diverse opportunities within conservation, empowering participants to align their passions with impactful career journeys in protecting nature.

WEBINAR: Global Plastics Treaty

On 21st October 2021, Biophilic Conversations, together with partners Climate Change Lawyers Café, Envirowild, and Asili Conservation Africa, convened an engaging virtual discussion on the need for a Global Plastics Treaty. The session explored the urgency of coordinated global action, while grounding the conversation in African perspectives and solutions.

BIOPHILIC FILM FESTIVAL

In 2021, Biophilic Conversations launched the first-ever Biophilic Film Festival in Kenya, a groundbreaking celebration of African films dedicated to nature, resilience, and hope. Created in partnership with Earth Optimism, the festival highlighted the power of film to inspire, educate, and mobilise communities to protect both local and global environments.

 

 

Amid a time of global uncertainty, the festival embraced a hybrid approach with online screenings and interactive sessions held from 26th March to 4th April 2021. Despite the challenges, it provided a vital platform for sharing environmental stories of restoration, resilience, and optimism, proving that creativity and conservation can flourish even in challenging times.

Conversations in a Changed World

The year 2020 was transformative for the world. As the pandemic reshaped how we connect, Biophilic Conversations pivoted online, ensuring vital dialogues on conservation, climate, and community continued without pause. Across the year, we hosted 15 inspiring speakers and welcomed more than 1000 participants into our virtual sessions. What began as a challenge became an opportunity to reach wider audiences, amplify diverse voices, and spark action beyond borders.

2019 WORKSHOPS AND FORUMS

wildlife clubs of kenya alumni campus edition

On 8th June 2019, we held an Alumni Campus Edition at the Wildlife Clubs of Kenya, centered on the theme “Conservation Action through Science.” The session began with a thought-provoking reflection on the role of scientists in policy. Speakers shared their personal conservation journeys, from how they started, to the challenges they faced, and the passions driving their plans. The second half of the session delved into how scientists can better engage in policy, communicate effectively, and use science as a tool for real-world conservation impact. The event featured speakers Nasike Akello, Abraham Njenga, Reinhard Bonke, Winnie Cheche, Paul Kaluki, and Francis Kago.

UNIVERSITY OF NAIROBI ALUMNI CAMPUS EDITION

On 23rd March 2019, we hosted the first Alumni Campus Edition at the University of Nairobi, College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences (CAVS). It was a day of interaction, mentorship, and knowledge sharing as Wildlife Management and Conservation alumni engaged with current students. The event featured a birdwatching session and inspiring talks by alumni speakers Mercy Waithera, Mandela Salim, Sidney Shema, Francis Kago, and Brian Waswala. 

LAUNCH OF BIOPHILIC CONVERSATIONS AT ANU GREEN WEEK 2019

On 6th February 2019, Biophilic Conversations was officially launched at the African Nazarene University Main Campus in Rongai, Kajiado County, during their annual Green Week. With the theme “Inspiring the Young Conservation Community in Kenya”, the event brought together passionate students and environmental leaders. Esteemed speakers, Elizabeth Wathuti, Nyawira Gitaka, Vincent Ontita, John Henry and Unelker Maoga, shared powerful insights on youth leadership, sustainability, and building a future where people and nature thrive.
